Steps
Step 1: PAINT
Using the Electro Resist Paint and a flat headed soft paint brush, paint the steel plate on one side only with a thin coat of the paint, making sure the entire surface is covered.
Wait for this coat of paint to dry then apply a second thin layer. Wait until this has fully dried before continuing.
TIP: It’s tempting to apply a thicker layer, but thinner and more coats work best.
Step 2: ETCH
On the painted side of the steel plate now write your words by scraping away the varnish with the etching pen.
TIP: You can do this quite gently, just make sure that you are exposing the bare metal beneath the varnish, you do not need to etch into the metal.
Step 3: CONNECT
Using sticky tape securely stick the red wire (positive) of the Battery Connector Wire to the middle of the non-painted side of the steel plate.
Stick the black wire (negative) to the etching pen.
Place the steel plate on a non-porous surface and connect the 9v battery to the battery connector wire.
Step 4: SALT WATER
In a small bowl mix the water and the salt together until fully dissolved.
Add a little of the salt water to the painted/etched side of the steel plate. Ensuring that the salt water comes into contact with the bare metal that will form your words.
Place the absorbent paper over your words and spoon on the salt water until the paper is fully moistened.
TIP: You can use warm water to help the salt dissolve quicker.
Step 5: ELECTRO ETCH
Lay the etching pen across the steel plate, on top of the moist paper. Leave for 30 mins to 1 hour. Add more salt water to the paper if needed to avoid it drying out.
TIP: You will know it’s working when you hear it softly fizzing and a rust colour appears on your paper.
Step 6: RINSE
Rinse the steel plate to remove the salt water. To quickly remove the resist varnish acetone works best.
